Coole Wind Farm SID Application
Coole Wind Farm Limited is applying for planning permission for a development consisting of up to 15 Wind Turbines, a grid connection, an onsite substation, a borrow pit, junction accommodation works, upgrade works to Mullingar substation and associated site development works. The proposed Wind Farm is located North of the village of Coole, Co. Westmeath.
Following consultations pursuant to Section 182E of the Planning & Development Act 2000 (as amended), An Bord Pleanála determined that the proposed development is Strategic Infrastructure Development within the meaning of Section 182A of the Act which necessitates a planning application being made directly to An Bord Pleanála.
It is a requirement of the Board that the applicant creates a specific website to include all of the application documentation.
The application was originally submitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála (formerly An Bord Pleánala) as Strategic Infrastructure Development (SID) under the provisions of Section 37E of the Planning and Development Act 2000, as amended on the 22 March 2021 under Ref No. ABP-309770-21. On the 21 April 2022, An Coimisiún Pleanála issued a request for Further Information in accordance with Section 37 (F)(1) of the Planning & Development Act 2000 (as amended). A response to the request for Further Information was submitted on the 1 November 2022. A decision to refuse permission was issued by An Coimisiún Pleanála on the 20 March 2024. This decision was subsequently appealed to the High Court and An Coimisiún Pleanála’s decision was quashed by Order of the High Court on the 10 February 2025. The application was thereafter remitted to An Coimisiún Pleanála for a new decision under the current case number (ACP-332902-25) and is now the subject of a Further Information Request issued by An Coimisiún Pleanála on 31 March 2026.
