PROJECT AT A GLANCE

  • Site size – circs. 96 hectares
  • Energy capacity to power approx. 20,000 homes
  • Fixed south-facing frames
  • Maximum height of 3.2 metres
  • Natural screening from the existing vegetation and supplemented by landscaping and tree planting plan
  • Community Benefit Fund of approx. €160,000 per year for the local area
  • On-site grid connection, need for cable works on public roads eliminated
  • Biodiversity Management Plan to be submitted as part of the application

Project Proposal

This proposal is a solar project located in the townlands of Stokesquarter, Painestown, Ricetown, Castletown K.P., and Navan, Co. Meath, which Statkraft Ireland intends to bring forward for planning consideration under Mill Farm Solar Project Ltd. This is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Statkraft Ireland.

This proposal would involve installing solar panels on farmland in the local area which, once operational, would provide renewable energy to the local electricity grid system. When designing the solar farm, the existing surrounding landscape was taken into consideration and we have endeavoured to ensure that, from a visual perspective, the proposal will blend into the natural surroundings to the greatest possible extent. A number of technical and environmental assessments have also been undertaken as part of the planning application. Please see the map for the draft site layout.

Should the proposal gain planning consent and ultimately be developed, it will have the capacity to power circa 20,000 homes with clean energy.

The solar panels proposed here consist of monocrystalline silicon solar cells laminated behind a sheet of glass to make a weatherproof package. At the proposed height, the existing vegetation will provide significant screening of the site and additional planting, including native trees, is proposed within the landscaping plan to minimise any potential visual impact on the landscape.

The site will be accessed from an existing access point off the L1604, as can be seen in the site map.

At Statkraft, we are very much aware of the importance of having a mix of renewable technologies to deliver climate action. We build and operate both solar projects and wind farms, and in every project we develop, thoughtful consideration is given to what is appropriate for a local area.

Timeline

It is intended to lodge a planning application in the near future and where successful, we would hope to commence initial construction activities 2023/2024 and be operational in 2025.
As this proposal develops, we will continue to provide information on the project where appropriate.
