Keith Park Grid Stability Building
The Project
What is the purpose of the development?
Rotating Stabilisers are designed to enable the electricity grid to be more flexible and to solve stability in your area. The future is in renewable energy generation, however our national grid infrastructure is still geared toward outdated fossil fuel technologies. Without much needed upgrades like these technologies the national grid will struggle to adapt. Our grid network needs to keep up with the rapid progress renewables has made in Northern Ireland. Sometimes the grid network has been forced to shut down wind farms and run gas power stations to keep the system stable. More projects like this one at Coleraine mean that running gas powered stations will become a thing of the past.
Project background
In 2021, planning permission was granted for a synchronous compensator (a device that provides grid stability) in Coleraine, Co. Derry, as part of efforts to enhance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy. This project was secured through the government's first Low Carbon Inertia Service auction. The synchronous compensator, built by Statkraft, will help maintain grid stability and facilitate the use of more renewable energy sources by providing inertia and strengthening the local grid connection.

Rotating Stabilisers Explained
What will the project look like?
Does Statkraft have any other projects like this in Ireland?
This project is one of four Synchronous Compensator projects currently being developed by Statkraft Ireland. Currently the only operational Synchronous Compensator on the island of Ireland is in Moneypoint, Co. Clare and is operated by ESB Networks.

Environmental Considerations
What are the environmental benefits the development will bring?
The preservation of biodiversity and wildlife onsite is a top priority for Statkraft, which is why we are committing to provide ecological enhancements on all our project sites.
We have consulted with the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council throughout the pre-application stage and have produced a Landscape Planting Plan to demonstrate the new boundary planting to accompany the Development.
As a global energy company, strategically focused on scaling renewable energy solutions, we believe that we can be instrumental in driving progress toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030. Though we have numerous initiatives that can be linked to different SDGs, our positive impacts are naturally concentrated around the goals for Climate Action (SDG 13). We contribute directly to climate change mitigation by displacing fossil fuels whilst meeting growing energy demand.
